Beltline breakfast: Morning dining in the heart of Calgary

Calgary is a city that loves its breakfast and brunch, so it’s no surprise that the bustling Beltline neighbourhood is packed with scrumptious options for sunrise and mid-morning eats. From diner grub to fine French dining, there are countless delicious and satisfying ways to break your fast.

Galaxie Diner

1413 11 St SW, Calgary, AB T2R 1G7

An all-day hipster breakfast joint, the Galaxie is full of ’50s diner charm in both its decor and its menu. It serves the standards you expect – scrambles, omelets and Benedicts – but they’re fresh and hearty, and the eatery’s comfortable, cheery vibe makes them taste all the more special.

Monki Breakfast Club & Bistro

1301 10 Ave SW, Calgary, AB T3C 0J4

Foodies flock to this cozy (and usually jam-packed) blonde-brick spot for its elevated take on brunch favourites. Its brunch menu features sweet dishes such as stuffed French toast as well as a mean brisket and sausage hash and eggs Benedicts with toppings that include smoked ham and prawns as well as Angus beef with sautéed mushrooms.

Beltliner The

3
243 12 Ave Sw, Calgary, AB T2R 1H7

Spacious and stylish, this contemporary Beltline diner serves breakfast standbys with a gourmet twist. The lobster Benedict is a fun splurge for refined palates, while the chocolate-milk French toast delivers a perfect mid-morning sugar fix.

Corbeaux

4
730 17 Ave SW, Calgary, AB T2S 0B7

Equal parts take-out bakery, cocktail bar, coffee house and dining room, Corbeaux is a big restaurant that shifts in personality as the day goes on. But in the morning, it’s all about breakfast served with house-made artisan breads. Winners include brioche French toast served with whipped ricotta, strawberries and sausages and Mexican-inspired breakfast nachos that come with refried beans, cheeses, pulled chicken, salsa and a sunny side egg.

Buttermilk Fine Waffles

A lot of breakfast places serve waffles. But how many of them serve waffles from 9 am to 10 pm (11 pm Friday and Saturday)? Indulge in sweet waffle creations that include lemon curd with goat cheese, cinnamon bun with cream cheese frosting and toasted pecans and blueberry with crème fraiche. Or opt for the savoury goodness of, say, waffles dressed with ham, asiago and Grana Padano cheeses plus caramelized onion.

Red's Diner Ltd

5
1415 4 St SW, Calgary, AB T2R 0Y2

The Fourth Street Southwest location of this all-day breakfast haunt features the exposed brick of its cool old Beltline apartment building home. Chill out in the laid-back diner and tuck into a breakfast sandwich featuring a fried egg, back bacon, cheddar, lettuce and tomato on your choice of bread. Also recommended, try the steak and eggs.

Ship & Anchor Pub

6
534 17th Avenue SW, Calgary, AB T2S 0B1

One of the Beltline’s most heralded pubs, The Ship and Anchor not only offers a little hair of the dog, but also a hearty brunch menu on weekends and holidays. The breakfast poutine is a satisfying belly-buster, or you can go lighter and get an order of eggs Florentine to complement a mid-morning pint with pals.

Yellow Door Bistro

7
119 12 Ave SW, Calgary, AB T2R 0G8

The brightly whimsical dining room at the ritzy Hotel Arts serves a wide array of à la carte dishes such as eggs Benedicts and omelets. A featured pancake dish is available all week, but the star of the show is the restaurant’s daily brunch buffet. Choose chef-inspired daily specials such as duck confit cassoulet or frittatas (all served in adorable mini Le Creuset cocottes), dressed-up pancakes or French toast from the griddle, or stick with pastries and charcuterie from the continental buffet.

Some restaurants are cavernous, giving patrons room to spread out and feel anonymous. Sometimes, though, it’s nice to get seriously cozy and settle into an intimate dining experience. These restaurants may be small on space, but they’re big on atmosphere. [Image credit: iStock.com/Predrag Vuckovic]
