Free for the eating: Great GF dishes in Calgary

The country’s top restaurant food trend, gluten-free (GF) dishes can be found on many Calgary menus these days. More than this, many eateries now feature more than mere token GF items and offer patrons both variety and deliciousness in their GF meals.

Much of Blue Star Diner’s elevated diner menu is available gluten free. 6920 MacLeod Trail SE, Calgary, AB T2H 0L3

A number of entrees are available gluten-free at this landmark steak and seafood complex on Macleod Trail just south of Chinook Centre. When in Rome, do as the Romans: order the GF prime rib sandwich served with veggies, fries and garlic toast.

133-4611 Bowness Rd NW, Calgary, AB T3B 0B2

Featuring an entire “gluten-aware” menu, there are many GF meals to enjoy at Notable, one of the city’s perennially acclaimed fine-dining establishments. From its signature dishes, try the rigatoni “carbonara” with rotisserie chicken, roasted mushrooms, guanciale Pecorino and peas.

The quintessential Mexican meal, tacos are also a relatively scarce commodity in Calgary. However, we’ve done some digging and unearthed the select few restaurants that make truly marvelous versions of these hand-held snacks.
The city’s summer season features a delicious dance card of culinary festivals and events. Many, such as Stampede-time pancake breakfasts, are easy to access the day of, but the various tasting and tippling shindigs listed here can fill up quickly, so purchasing tickets sooner than later for these foodie festivities is recommended. The city’s pathway system is one of the longest in North America. Given its lengthy stretches, the occasional rest and snack stop, though few and far between, are a welcome sight when walking, biking and inline skating.
