Go for a show at Montreal’s art film and independent cinemas

While big action blockbusters may appeal to the masses, there’s something to be said for the more nuanced, dare we say intellectual, productions from independent film houses. You won’t find these artful films playing at your local multi-screen movie theatre; rather, you’ll have to seek out one of Montreal’s handful of independent cinemas. [Image credit: iStock.com]

Cinematheque La Quebecoise

1
335 Boul De Maisonneuve E, Montréal, QC H2X 1K1

Faithful to the memory of film, the Cinémathèque québécoise was created by a group of film enthusiasts in 1963. Although its mission has evolved over the years, today the institution is dedicated to the promotion of film culture, creating national and international film archives as well as film screenings for non-commercial, educational and artistic purposes. Its schedule incorporates short and feature films from a collection of over 40,000 works.

Warm and friendly, the room has about 40 seats. Each week, a filmmaker comes to present their work and speak with the audience.

PHI Centre

407 rue Saint-Pierre, Montréal, QC H2Y 2M3

Located in Old Montreal, Phi Centre serves as a multidisciplinary cultural centre where the public can view original productions and engage with artists. The Centre is also a venue for art films and “repertoire.”
