Restaurants with fireplaces in Calgary

There’s just something about fireside dining that makes a meal special. They probably won’t let you roast any chestnuts in the fireplaces of these cozy Calgary restaurants and bars, but you can at least keep the winter chills at bay while enjoying an extra-comforting meal.

Bow Valley Ranche Restaurant

1
15979 Bow Bottom Trail SE, Calgary, AB T2J 7A7

At the very south end of Bow Bottom Trail Southeast, surrounded by the natural beauty of Fish Creek Park, sits the Bow Valley Ranche Restaurant. A renovated heritage ranch house, with elegant decor and professional staff, the restaurant serves contemporary interpretations of Alberta regional cuisine. While there’s seating for 125 guests, only a fortunate few patrons each day can finagle a seat near the lovely fireplace.

The Living Room Restaurant

2
514-17 Ave SW, Calgary, AB T2S 0B1

This cozy restaurant is set back from the bustle of 17th Avenue Southwest by a large front patio that features two large outdoor fireplaces, which extend the establishment’s outdoor dining season. The restaurant’s contemporary cuisine features delicious twists on classic French and Italian dishes with a distinctive Canadian touch. Many dishes are designed with sharing in mind. If you’re lucky, you’ll find an open space in the complimentary parking lot in the rear of the building.

Lake House

3
747 Lake Bonavista Dr SE, Calgary, AB T2J 0N2

One of my favourite fine dining spots in the city, the rustic elegance of The Lake House is perfect for celebrating a special occasion or simply unwinding in its elegantly casual surroundings. Every seat in the restaurant affords an excellent view of Lake Bonavista through large glass windows, and the ornate elk-antler chandeliers throw soft light when the sun has gone down. The restaurant’s grand stone fireplace is a focal piece, as is the 130-square-foot, glass-encased wine cellar and refurbished bar from the 1800s.

Rose & Crown Pub

4
1503 4 St SW, Calgary, AB T2R 0Y3

The great food, expansive beer list and friendly servers at the Rose & Crown just north of Fourth Street and 17th Avenue Southwest keep the this sociable pub English buzzing night after night. A former funeral home built in the 1920s, it was turned into a bar in 1986. The table in front of its wood-burning fireplace is rarely empty (and when it is, they’ll sometimes tweet it out to local followers), but there are plenty of other sweet seating spots in this deceptively large pub.

The Rimrock

5
133 9 Avenue SW, Calgary, AB T2P 2M3

The Rimrock at the grand old Fairmont Palliser serves cuisine that hearkens back to the golden age of luxury travel when it was part of the iconic Canadian Pacific Hotels chain. Open for service Thursday through Saturday evenings, the historic room is dominated by an enormous fireplace. Chocolate lovers can book a spot at the room’s popular Death by Chocolate buffet and enjoy their sweet treats by the roaring fire.

Bears Den

6
254028 Bearspaw Rd, Calgary, AB T3L 2P7

This chic, contemporary steakhouse in Bearspaw is a seriously atmospheric restaurant and lounge. An upscale den done up in warm cherry wood, its newly renovated formal dining room features a lovely brick-and-tile fireplace. For seating at the restaurant’s popular Sunday brunch, be sure to call for a reservation.

Levilla Restaurant

7
404-1851 Sirocco Dr SW, Calgary, AB T3H 4R5

This top-notch dining room in Signal Hill merges fine French cuisine with a traditional steakhouse. Its large stone-studded fireplace offers seating on four sides, and is a focal point for the elegant room. Peruse the multiple-award-winning menu and dive into a fine meal by personable owner and chef Rick Chuk.

Sandstone Lounge

8
700 Centre St SE, Calgary, AB T2G 5P6

Settle into a leather lounge chair in front of the fireplace at the Sandstone Lounge on the main floor of the downtown Hyatt Regency Calgary. Serving exceptional Rocky Mountain cuisine from Thompsons Restaurant located next door, it’s perfect for casual lunches, dinners or cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. This western-themed lounge offers a relaxing setting complete with wall-mounted buffalo head and friendly, food-savvy staff. Consider enjoying your fireside meal with a regularly scheduled live jazz performance.

The Nash Restaurant & Off Cut Bar

9
925 11 St SE, Calgary, AB T2G 0R4

The food served at The Nash – run by renowned chef Michael Noble – draws crowds, but they linger because the atmosphere is as cheerful as its vintage furnishings are polished. The Nash features golden light fixtures, community tables and an open kitchen, as well as a roaring fireplace. The Inglewood restaurant is a perfect spot to see and be seen while indulging in delicious contemporary Canadian cuisine and creative cocktails.

If the only hot chocolate you know is the grainy mix from a store-bought tin or the muck shot from arena vending machines, it’s time to venture into the cafés and chocolate shops of Calgary and treat your taste buds to a much more satisfying version of this decadent winter treat.
