Stop believing these 10 hair myths

November 26, 2014

Some hair care tips can be helpful, but others are pure myths that will only confuse you. Here are 10 common hair myths you can stop believing.

Stop believing these 10 hair myths

1. Trim hair for faster growth

This is an obvious myth, as it defies simple physics.

  • Your hair will look healthier and fuller, but grow faster? Don't hold your breath.

2. Food-based conditioners work best

Food will not harm your hair in any way, but there's no evidence that using olive oil, avocado or vinegar on your hair has any real benefits.

  • Opt for a natural commercial product free of alcohol and parabens, and save the food for meals instead of your hair regimen.

3. Switching shampoos makes them more effective

Unless your hair colour or texture changes suddenly, there's no reason to replace the shampoo you know and love.

  • If you've found a product that works for you, keep using it.

4. Cold water increases shine

Seems like the cool new thing: if you wash your hair with ice-cold water, it will come out looking shiny, healthy and full.

  • In truth, it doesn't make any difference whether you wash with hot or cold water.

5. Grey hairs multiply if you pluck them

Plucking your hair might irritate your scalp, and it won't stop your grey hairs from growing back again.

  • Plucking, however, will not produce additional greys.

6. Avoid conditioning oily hair

Although you may want to avoid using conditioner on your roots, there's no reason to avoid applying conditioner to the rest of your hair.

  • Conditioner will leave your hair softer and easier to comb — not oilier.

7. Serums can cure split ends

The truth is that the only way you can get rid of them is by trimming regularly. Once hair is split, the damage is permanent.

8. Eat meat for fuller hair

Although protein is very important for healthy hair, skin and nails, eating meat is not necessary.

  • Healthy, balanced eating is crucial for maintaining beautiful hair, but vegetarians can get their protein through other sources.

9. Stress causes grey hair

Actually, genetic factors determine when you go grey, and there's very little you can do about it.

  • Remaining positive under difficult circumstances is beneficial to your general well being, but it has nothing to do with reducing grey hair.

10. Ponytails cure dandruff

While wearing a ponytail might help hide dandruff, it can't cure it.

  • Dandruff is a scalp condition that requires treatment with the right shampoo.
