1. Chicken noodle soup

There might be nothing more comforting and healing than chicken noodle soup, and it's a great food to cook during cold and flu season.

For a simple slow cooker recipe, simply:

  1.  Add two chicken breasts, 2 chopped carrots, 1 chopped onion, 3 chopped celery stalks, 3 tablespoons of olive oil, a whole bay leaf, 7 cups of chicken broth, and then minced garlic, salt and pepper to taste into the pot.
  2. Cover the pot and turn it on low. The soup should cook for at least 6 hours.
  3. When it's done, simply uncover, add 2 cups of your favourite kind of cooked noodles, and re-cover for about 5 minutes.
  4. After 5 minutes, simply remove the lid and ladle it out!

2. Macaroni and cheese

One of the most decadent and popular comfort foods in the world is macaroni and cheese, and it's possible to make a delicious version in a slow cooker.

  1. Combine 4 cups of dry macaroni, 4 cups of grated sharp cheddar cheese, 8 ounces of cream cheese, 4 cups of milk, and salt and pepper.
  2. Cover your cooker and let it cook on low for four hours. Try to stir the pot when you can to make sure it's cooking evenly and so everything mixes together.
  3. When you're done, you'll have a creamy and cheesy mac and cheese to sink your teeth into.

3. Pulled BBQ pork

Pulled pork is a comfort food that is particularly beloved in the American south, and it's very easy to make in a slow cooker.

  • What you'll need for the pork is 3 pounds of pork shoulder, chopped into two or three big pieces. To cook the meat, place an onion chopped into two or three pieces on the bottom of the cooker, then put the meat on top of the onion.
  • Mix together two tablespoons of paprika, a tablespoon of salt, a teaspoon of pepper, a teaspoon of cayenne pepper, a teaspoon of garlic powder, half a cup of honey, a quarter cup of red wine vinegar, and a quarter cup of extra virgin olive oil. This should form a thin paste.
  • Pour this paste all over the meat, then turn the slow cooker on low, cover it, and let it cook for 8 hours. When it's done, pull the meat apart with a fork and serve.

This pairs very well with coleslaw.

4. Chili

Chili is a great slow cooker food because it is very simple to make, plus it's hearty and filling.

  • To make a simple chili, combine a pound of ground beef, a can of chopped tomatoes, a can of tomato sauce, a can of kidney beans, and a packet of chili seasoning, which is easy to find at your local supermarket.
  • Simply start by browning the meat, then combine everything in a crock pot and cook on low covered for at least 2 hours. This can cook all day, and it only gets more and more flavourful.
