1. Plastic storage bin

  • Many hardware or home goods stores sell large plastic bins for storage. You can use these bins to create your own compost.
  • To prepare the bin for use, drill small holes on the sides, bottom, and lid. The holes are necessary to allow air to circulate through the compost.
  • When you're finished, fill your bin with dirt and add scraps.
  • Be sure to shake the bin up after you add scraps so the ingredients can mix.
  • Once your compost is done, you'll have a handy container to help store the compost and spread it when it's full.

2. Wheeled garbage can

  • If you have an old wheeled garbage can at home, you can use it for making compost.
  • Similar to the plastic storage bin, you should drill holes on the top, sides, and bottom of the can.
  • Next, create a flap on the top of the garbage can so you can easily slip scraps in without having to open the whole lid.
  • You can also consider adding a spout at the bottom of the can. This will allow you to drain liquid out of the can and use it as liquid fertilizer.

3. The ground

  • Once your compost has been finished and you need to empty out your bin to make more, consider storing your compost on the ground under a tarp.
  • This method allows the compost to remain moist, yet protected.
  • When you store compost in your yard you can easily use a shovel to add it to your garden whenever you need to, making this an extremely convenient option.
