The eye area is the first part of the face that reveals stress and fatigue. As for the lips, they dry out because their thin skin is constantly exposed to external agents. Here are some tips for taking care of them at home.

4 DIY treatments for at-home eye and lip care

1. Make calming chamomile milk

Azulene, the active ingredient contained in chamomile, is anti-inflammatory and reduces facial redness while the milk in this treatment soothes irritated skin. Used very cold, it constricts blood vessels and reduces swelling.

Ingredients:

  • 2 chamomile tea bags
  • 60 ml (¼ cup) ice milk

Preparation:

  • Dip the chamomile tea bags into the milk for five minutes. Wring them out.
  • Place the tea bags on your eyes for ten minutes.

2. Prepare a plant oil 

The fine texture of the vitamin E oil hydrates the lashes and the jojoba delays the appearance of wrinkles; it also slows the signs of aging.

Ingredients:

  • 35 g (1½ tbsp.) jojoba oil
  • 3 drops essential oil of rose
  • 2drops essential oil offrankincense
  • 1 capsule of vitamin E of500 IU

Preparation:

  • Mix the ingredients in a stained glass bottle.
  • Dab a few drops on the eye contour area.

3. Create eyebright (euphrasia) compresses

This preparation refreshes tired eyes or eyes that are irritated by dust, allergies or working in front of a screen all day. The tannins contained in the plants tighten the tissues and stimulate lymphatic drainage.

Ingredients:

  • 15 g (1 tbsp.) dried eyebright (euphrasia)
  • 5 g (1 tsp.) crushed fennel seeds
  • 5 g (1 tsp.) dried elderflowers
  • 250ml (1 cup) boiling water

Preparation:

  • Put the plants in boiling water. Cover and let cool completely.
  • Strain the liquid into a cheesecloth or a coffee filter.
  • Dip a clean cloth into the liquid and hold it over your eyes for ten minutes.

4. Make a honey lip balm 

Commercial balms often contain petroleum derivatives, artificial fragrances and carcinogens. To replace them, try this natural plant-based balm.

Ingredients:

  • 15 g (1 tbsp.) beeswax chips
  • 30 ml (2 tbsp.) almond oil
  • 30 ml (2 tbsp.) castor oil
  • 15 g (1 tbsp.) cocoa butter
  • 5 g (1 tsp.) honey
  • 1 capsule vitamin E of 500 IU
  • 10 drops rose essential oil

Preparation:

  • In a hot water double boiler, melt the beeswax, castor and almond oils, cocoa butter and honey over low heat, stirring constantly.
  • Remove from heat, and add the contents of the capsule and the essential oil of rose. Place the container into an ice water bath and whisk until the mixture has the consistency of a cream.
  • Siphon the balm, using a spoon, into small jars, that you can keep refrigerated for six months.
