6 tips for finding non-toxic kids' toys

December 19, 2014

To limit your children's exposure to toxic substances, start with the toy box. Here are a few tips to help you buy non-toxic baby toys.

6 tips for finding non-toxic kids' toys

1. Choose materials carefully

Opt for natural and organic fibres that are PVC-free and contain no perfumes, preservatives or artificial colours.

  • Natural fabrics such as cotton, flax and wool are recommended.
  • Make sure wooden toys are unvarnished or painted with non-toxic paint that’s resistant to baby’s saliva.

2. Support environmental companies

Some companies have it as their corporate mission to respect the environment and children's health.

  • Seek out these companies and support them with your purchasing power.

3. Look for ecological guarantees

Choose toys and games that are stamped or labeled as environmentally safe. Although such labels are not guarantees, they're a good place to start.

4. Communicate with the company

Don't hesitate to ask questions of toy manufacturers and distributors.

  • They're required to inform you of the materials and substances used in the manufacture of their toys, even if those substances could be considered dangerous.

5. When you get the toy home

Remove the toy from its packaging and let it ventilate before giving it to your child.

  • If there are off-gassing substances in it, they’ll have time to release and dissipate.
  • Wash the toy according to the manufacturer’s instructions before using it.
  • You may want to wash dyed textiles once or twice. However, if dye continues to bleed out, it may be better to discard the toy.
  • Stuffed animals are often covered with a flame retardant, so put them through a cycle in the washing machine.

6. Give it a test-drive

Why not give a new toy a test drive? You may feel a bit silly, but squeeze it, bite it and lick it.

  • You’ll quickly get a taste of how your child is going to experience the toy, and you’ll have a better idea if it’s going to be safe enough.

When you're out looking for new baby toys, use these tips as a guide to buying the best non-toxic toys you can find.
