1. Wash
Every professional blowout starts with a rinse. Hop in the shower and wash your tresses with shampoo and conditioner formulated for your hair type – whether it’s dry, oily, curly, or fine. Remove excess moisture from your hair with an absorbent towel so that your strands are damp, not soaking wet before you start blow-drying.

2. Detangle
Use a wide-toothed comb or wet brush to gently smooth out your strands and remove any knots, starting in sections from the bottom and working your way up to the roots. If your hair is particularly fine or damaged, try a lightweight detangling spray.

3. Protect
Blow-dryers, straighteners, curling irons, and other high-heat tools can cause serious damage to your hair over time, so it’s important to prep your strands with a good heat protectant to help lock-in moisture before a blowout. Apply a leave-in thermal spray, oil, or cream that’s specifically designed for your hair to prevent breakage, combat frizz, and keep your hair healthy.

4. Prep
Use a hairdryer to rough-dry your mane on medium heat. Once your hair is about 60 to 70 per cent dry, divide tresses into easy-to-manage one-inch sections and pin each section to your head with a clip – this will make your hair easier to work with.

5. Dry & Style
When giving yourself a DIY blowout, a round brush can add volume to limp locks and make curly hair smooth and glossy.

  1. To get started, unclip one section of hair and place a round brush underneath the strands at the crown of your head. Hold the round brush horizontally against your head to achieve a pin-straight style or vertically for a soft, wavy look.
  2. Point the hairdryer nozzle downward on the taut strands (making sure not to touch the hair directly) and pull the brush slowly through the section.
  3. Once you’ve moved the brush through to the ends, repeat until the section is dry.
  4. Finish each section by blasting the ends with a shock of cold air to help hold the style.

If you find it challenging to master a round brush blowout, consider buying an all-in-one hair tool to help cut down styling time and prevent your arm from getting sore:
