6 things you need to know about vintage clothes shopping

July 28, 2015

If you have a flair for fashion, you may be the kind of shopper who loves to hunt for a unique item at a great price. These tips will help you go on a style adventure in vintage and second-hand stores —you won't believe what you'll find!

6 things you need to know about vintage clothes shopping

1. Unique on a budget

  • Although vintage clothing stores tend not to be as cheap as charity stores, you can still find good second-hand bargains in them.
  • Many are stocked from the charity stores, so they will already have the cream of the crop. If you're short of time, it can be worth starting at one of the better-quality shops to find real retro chic.

2. Special events

  • Keep your eye out for special charity events where used clothing is sold. Your local newspaper will have a listing of various fundraising events — some of which have "yard sale" themes.
  • Also look for bazaars advertised online or in your local newspaper. Admission is usually very low and well worth it for the very low prices and huge volume of clothes and accessories from which to choose.

3. Avoid a fashion faux pas

When considering a vintage item, make sure it is in keeping with your personal style. To avoid spending on something you will be unable to wear, keep current trends, colours and shapes in mind.

4. Networking: everyone wins

It's always satisfying to get a new item for your wardrobe or accessory drawer for nothing, or next to nothing.

  • Organize like-minded friends and acquaintances to meet regularly to sell your unwanted items. Set a few basic rules, such as all clothes, accessories and jewellery must be of good quality and in excellent condition. Then, get selling to each other at knockdown prices.

5. Swap for fun and great value

Swap shops are even more fun than network parties, but you need to work out what constitutes a fair swap.

  • The best way is to put items into different categories and swap like for like — not just similar items but ones that are of approximate value. For example, if you had an expensive piece of jewellery that you don't wear any more you could swap it for top-quality, well-cut pants; or you could trade an upscale jacket for a skirt and top.

6. Church fundraisers

Check the local papers for church fundraisers. They often take place several times a year as part of an effort to raise funds for the church.

  • These sales are often mistakenly associated with bake goods only. You may indeed find a good banana loaf at a church sale, but you are more likely to find good deals on clothing.
  • Parishioners are more than happy to donate good clothing no longer suitable for a growing teenager or an adult with a growing waistline.
  • As is the case with garage sales and some of the smaller thrift shops, haggling is expected.
  • Remember that they want to rid themselves of the clothing and make a few dollars in the process.

Follow these tips and you can add some unique pieces to your wardrobe without paying an arm and a leg!
