Spa etiquette for first-time spa guests

If you've booked your first treatment at the spa and are getting ready for a relaxing retreat, make sure you're aware of some basic guidelines that can help you make the most of the experience.

6 tips for first-time spa-goers

1. Do your homework before you go

  • Most spas post a complete menu of services on their websites with thorough descriptions of services and treatments. However, you may have some questions about the treatments and need more information about the spa facilities, such as the sauna, steam room and fitness centre amenities.
  • Don't be afraid to call the spa ahead of time and ask the staff to walk you through the visit so you know what to expect.

2. Show up early

  • Most spas will give you a brief tour of the facility before your treatment that includes the locker rooms, bathrooms, sauna, hot tub and other amenities.
  • Arriving at least 20 to 30 minutes before your appointment will allow you sufficient time to fill out necessary paperwork and make the most of your brief tour.

3. Drink lots of water

  • If you're getting a massage or any type of body treatment at the spa, it's particularly important to stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water before and after your treatment, and be sure to pick up bottled water, tea or lemon water during your spa experience.
  • If you're getting a deep tissue massage, you'll need to make sure you drink more water for several hours after your session.

4. Don't book anything else for the day

  • Even though your spa appointment may only take a couple of hours, you'll want to avoid jumping right back into your hectic routine after your few hours of bliss.
  • Refraining from booking any other activities for the day will allow you to unwind and relax during your spa day.

5. Talk to your practitioner

  • You'll need to communicate your needs and feelings to your massage therapist, body worker or skin care specialist. Don't be afraid to speak up.

6. Learn the tipping policy

  • Some spas are happy to accept gratuities, while others ask guests to refrain from tipping. Call the spa before your visit and ask about the tipping policy to ensure that you set aside enough money for the tip.
