Facts to consider about organic versus non-organic apples

November 3, 2015

While organic apples are often pricier than non-organic apples, it's hard to justify the cost without a bit of research. Whether or not organic apples are really a better choice is a topic of debate and the following factors can make a big impact on your outlook and your budget.

Facts to consider about organic versus non-organic apples

1. Pesticide content

  • While organic apples are grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, small amounts of these pesticides may still be present on organic apples.
  • The Canadian Food Inspection Agency notes that though no pesticides are permitted when growing organic produce, they may still come in contact with small amounts of pesticides from neighbouring fields or when they are being transported.
  • Therefore, if you choose organic apples it's best to thoroughly wash them before eating them, as you would with non-organic apples.
  • Eat Right Ontario reports that while synthetic pesticide levels are significantly higher in non-organic apples, the levels are still safe for consumption and can be washed off by scrubbing them under running water for 30 seconds.

2. Concerns about genetic modification

  • Genetically modified apples are grown from seeds that have been altered in a lab before the seeds are planted.
  • This deters some people because they don't know exactly how the foods have been modified.
  • Organic produce is grown without the use of genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, while non-organic foods may contain GMOs.
  • In Canada, manufacturers are not required to state on food labels whether foods are genetically modified.
  • GMO apples may be approved to be sold in Canada, but only if Health Canada determines the specific brands are safe for consumers.

3. Nutrition content

  • Organic and non-organic apples are equally nutritious.
  • According to EatRight Ontario, no studies exist that determined organic apples to be more nutrient-dense than non-organic apples. For example, vitamin, mineral and fibre content are similar in both organic and non-organic apples.
  • However, organic apples often spoil sooner and have to be eaten right away because they contain fewer preservatives. Some people prefer the taste of organic apples, but that's a matter of personal preference.

4. Which is better?

  • Not everyone is willing to spend extra cash for organic produce.
  • On the other hand, choosing organic apples helps ensure you're getting fewer synthetic pesticides.
  • Eat Right Ontario reports that organic and non-organic apples are both tested regularly to ensure they are safe for consumers, so anything available for sale is considered safe as long as consumers take time to clean them appropriately.
