5 things you must know about fitness equipment safety

October 17, 2014

Your goal is to keep fit, not break an arm or have a clump of hair torn out. Here’s a quick lesson to show you how fitness equipment and safety go hand in hand.

  1. When you want to try a new machine at the fitness centre, ask a staff member to show you how to use it properly. Have them show you how to adjust it for your height, weight and strength.
  2. If you just bought a new fitness machine, read the manufacturer’s user manual. Make sure that it’s properly assembled and that there is enough space around the machine for it to operate safely. If you’re in the basement, make sure the ceiling is sufficiently high. Don’t leave the power cord lying where you can trip over it.
  3. One of the main rules regarding fitness equipment and safety is to make sure it’s always properly maintained. Check every once in a while to make sure all bolts are still tight, and stay on the lookout for any signs of wear or unusual noises. Clean the equipment before and after each use; remove the dust before your workout if it’s been a while, and wipe up any sweat after your workout, along with any spilled water that could pose a slipping hazard.
  4. Wear the appropriate kind of clothing for exercise; after all, your goal is to get fit, not flirty. Tie back long hair so it doesn’t get caught in the moving parts of a machine (ouch!). Tie shoelaces tightly, and avoid anything that might slip, hang or get stuck in your equipment. Leave your towel, jewellery, or sweatshirt on a stool beside your machine while you’re working out.
  5. Respect your physical limitations. Use fitness equipment that matches your abilities and use it at a setting that suits your cardiovascular condition. If you’re working with free weights, work out with a partner to avoid injury, and ask a professional trainer for tips on technique. Remember to start with a warm up and finish the session with some stretches.

What’s that bright red thing on my treadmill?

Most treadmills are equipped with a magnetic safety key; usually it’s a hard-to-miss red. This red key is one of the greatest fitness equipment and safety developments; it’s used to turn on the machine, but also to stop it quickly. The magnetic end of the key should be attached to the console, while the other end is clipped to your outfit. If you misstep and fall, the key will be tugged out of its slot and the tread belt will immediately stop moving. Use it to your advantage!
