Helpful guide to keeping your spa or whirlpool bathtub clean

July 28, 2015

To get the most out of your spa or whirlpool bathtub you need to be on top of the cleaning. Grease from body oils, sun block or soap can clog the filter, which will encourage bacteria to grow. And ear, eye or skin infections may occur.

Helpful guide to keeping your spa or whirlpool bathtub clean

1. How often should you clean your spa or whirlpool tub?

  • If two people use it three nights a week, clean it thoroughly and drain it every three months.
  • If you have a lot of kids, and the family uses it up to six nights a week, step up your cleaning to every two months.
  • If your spa is more for decoration than relaxation, clean it as required. You'll still have to test the chemical levels weekly.
  • If you aren't keeping track of your use, a good rule of thumb is to drain the water every three to six months. You won't need a calendar to know when you've waited too long. The water will be cloudy or foamy, or it'll smell like a science experiment.

2. To clean algae, suntan oil or body oil coating

  • Soak the filter overnight in a degreaser cleaning solution (available from your spa and swimming pool shop). Some experts recommend soaking the filter monthly in a degreaser.
  • If clogging persists, check your water chemistry and adjust, drain and clean the spa, or buy a new filter cartridge.
  • Replace the filter annually.

3. Every three months

  • Drain the water and clean the acrylic shell inside and out with a non-soap-based cleaner from your pool shop.
  • Spray it on the spa, let it sit for a minute and then wipe off any scum or stains, or rub with a sponge.
  • Make sure you don't spray the cleaner into the jets.
  • You can also wipe the spa surface with baking soda and water, then rinse well with water.
  • Refill the spa right away.
  • If you plan to leave it empty, talk to your pool and spa shop about products to protect the surface.

4. To clean spa or whirlpool tub covers

  • Use a vinyl cleaner.
  • Applying an automotive paste wax to your cover is a good idea — it creates a barrier between the cover and the sun, slowing down the sun's fading action.

5. When the cleaning is done

  • Refill the spa with cold water. It will take about an hour.
  • Once full, do your water tests and add the amount of chemicals and sanitizers recommended by your spa's manufacturer.
  • Start the spa.
  • It will take six to 12 hours for the water to reheat.
  • Until the next water change and cleaning, your chemicals and filtering will keep the 39°C (102°F) water clear and fresh.
