Kitchen countertops on the cheap

If you want to replace your kitchen countertops on a budget, you have a few options. Some less expensive materials include bamboo, glass and concrete. However, if cheap and cheerful is really what you’re after, it’s best to stick with laminate or tile surfaces, which can give you a stylish bang for your buck.

Here’s a quick look at some of the cheapest countertop options:

Tile granite

Unlike solid granite, which is a natural stone and very expensive, tile granite is its inexpensive cousin and can be found at most large tile stores or hardware retail chains. Tile granite is easy to install, durable, and stain-, heat- and scratch-resistant. And since the tiles are fitted close together, there’s no need to pay for grout, so you’ll save big bucks on installation.

Laminate

Laminate countertops offer exceptional value and versatility. These economical countertops are durable, water-resistant, and easy to install, clean, and maintain. The downside is they will have visible seams. Laminates are available in shiny or matte finishes and a wide selection of solid colours, simulated stone looks, faux wood grains, and various patterns. Keep in mind, the simpler the edge, the cheaper the countertop.

Ceramic tile

A long-time favourite for cheap yet attractive-looking countertops, ceramic tile can offer a high-style look at a low cost. They are available in a wide range of solid colours and patterns, in either glossy or matte finishes. Some are made to look like stone or concrete. With a little ingenuity, you can also combine them for a more interesting patterned look. However, the price will go up if you choose more complex patterns and specialty tiles. Like granite tiles, they are easy to install, durable, and stain-, heat- and scratch-resistant. Just be aware that ceramic-tiled surfaces aren't entirely smooth, and their grout lines will require occasional bleaching and resealing.
