Picking the perfect running shoes

Road runners, trail runners or barefoot style?

  • Road running shoes are for urban environments and paved or hard-packed surfaces. They're very light, breathable and flexible.
  • Trail running shoes are better if you're planning on running in the woods or other off-road areas. These are reinforced for better stability on uneven terrain, and they have specialized outsoles for traction and loose surfaces.
  • Barefoot-style running shoes, which are minimal to the point where many actually look like gloves for the feet, with separated toes. These running shoes are for maximizing the feel for the terrain and giving the most natural feel possible.

Consider your foot size

  • Obviously, you want running shoes that fit your feet.
  • Make sure to pick the right size, and consider having your feet measured at a running store or specialist to see if, for instance, one is a different size than the other.

Buy according to your arch shape

Feet generally fall into three arch shapes so be sure to think of your arches when selecting your shoes.

  • A high arch means the middle of your foot mostly doesn't touch the ground as you walk or run. You're going to want some solid arch supports and possibly special insoles if you have high arches.
  • Flat feet have little or no arch, and the entire foot touches the ground.
  • In between, of course, are all the normal arches, which are raised, but not to the point where special support is necessary.

Don't forget about foot motion

Not only does the shape of your foot affect the way you run, everyone has a different level of supination or pronation.

  • Pronation is the natural tendency for the foot to roll inward when striking the ground.
  • Supination is when the foot rolls outward when running.
  • Depending on your running style, you'll notice your shoes wear out differently over time based on these motions.
  • If you suspect you have an unusually high degree of foot rolling in either direction, it's worth considering special support to counteract the motion as you run.

Running shoes are ergonomic and durable, and they keep your feet happy whether you're running, jogging, strolling or dancing. Enjoy comfort and style by picking the best pair of running shoes for your feet.
