Storage solutions for every room in your home

September 8, 2015

It can be hard finding space for all the stuff in your house without going through the decluttering process. Thankfully, here are some clever storage solutions for every room in your home.

Storage solutions for every room in your home

Maximize closet space

  • There's no such thing as a closet that's big enough.
  • But you can store more stuff in the space you already have with a closet organizer system.
  • For economy and quick installation, you can't beat wire-shelving systems; you can outfit a typical closet with one of these systems in an afternoon.
  • But before you go shopping, spend a few minutes online checking out your options, accessories and installation steps.
  • If you want a more elegant look, be prepared to spend plenty of money buying one or time building your own.

Boost bathroom storage

  • Many bathrooms have wall space, usually next to the door, that's perfect for an extra medicine cabinet — or even two.
  • With "recessed" cabinets that fit between studs, you don't lose the least bit of bathroom space.
  • Ready-to-hang medicine cabinets are available at most home centres.

More shower shelves

  • The trouble with shower caddies that hang from the shower-head pipe is that you have only one shower-head.
  • To get more space for your bath potions, hang another caddy on a cabinet knob.
  • Try using a no. 8-32 hanger screw.
  • This kind of screw will allow you to screw the knob into a stud.
  • To fasten your extra knob to drywall, use a screw-in drywall anchor along with the hanger screw.

Easy-mount mini bins

  • You can use electrical junction boxes to hold easy-mount mini bins as well as your wiring.
  • You can nail or screw these bins to just about anything anywhere.
  • In your workshop, these bins are great for those tools that can't hang on hooks — tape measures, markers, chisels, etc.
  • These plastic boxes are easy to find in various sizes and shapes at most hardware and home stores.

Optimize cabinet space

  • Lower cabinets offer the biggest storage spaces in your kitchen.
  • But the back half of your cabinets is usually wasted — it's filled with forgotten stuff or left empty because it's out of sight and out of reach.
  • Rollout shelves reclaim that otherwise unused space.
  • You can buy rollouts for these drawers or build your own.

Fill those cavities

  • An unfinished wall or ceiling isn't an eyesore; it's a storage opportunity.
  • With some shelf hardware and 2.5 centimetre by 10 centimetre (1 inch by 4 inch) lumber, you can pack 2.4 metres (8 feet) or more of storage into one wall stud cavity.
  • You can also turn ceiling joist space into storage space with wire shelving.

Giant twist ties

  • Don't toss out those leftover scraps of electrical cable.
  • These bits of cable let you bundle up and neatly store all kinds of stuff.
  • To hang up or carry your bundle, twist a loop in the cable.

Add slim spaces to cabinets

  • Every kitchen needs a slot for flat cookware like cookie sheets and pizza pans.
  • The simplest way to create these slots is to add extra shelves spaced about 5 centimetres (2 inches) apart.
  • Since most cabinets have adjustable shelves, you just have to pick up a bag of shelf supports at a home centre and cut new shelves from plywood or particleboard.
  • A vertical niche is a bit more convenient than shelves because the stored items aren't stacked up; you can pull out one thing without removing the whole stack.
  • To make a vertical niche, just add a plywood divider, drill holes for shelf supports and shorten the existing adjustable shelf.

Keep these storage solutions in mind, and you'll have an easier time organizing all of the things you have in your home.
