Types of banners to advertise your business

How are banners used?

Depending on your business, banners can be used for a variety of reasons. Businesses with a physical location might use banners to advertise a special offer, feature or new management. Businesses that operate strictly online will use banners on popular websites to direct customers to their online location. These types of banners can also be used to express various messages related to your business, like sales, new stock, and contests.

Printed vinyl and paper banners

These types of banners are mainly used for businesses that have a physical location and storefront. Printed banners can be made out of different materials, but the most common are made of vinyl and paper. Vinyl is probably the most popular choice, since the material is more durable than paper. Vinyl signs are so durable they can be hung outdoors to attract customers to walk into your place of business.

Vinyl signs are also a good choice if you are attending a conference or trade show and need signage for a booth or table. Paper banners are less durable than vinyl, but are a great low cost option if you need signage indoors. Paper banners can be printed to compliment your outdoor vinyl banners. Since you don’t need to worry about the elements ruining banners hung inside your business, paper banners work just fine.

Web banners

Whether you have an online business or a business with a store-front, web banners are a good way to promote your business to potential customers while they browse the internet. Like printed banners, there are many different types of web banners, but we’ll focus on the most popular.

There are standard web banners. The most commonly used are called big box (250x250 pixels), leaderboard (728x90 pixels), and skyscraper (120x600 pixels). You will need to have the help of a designer to create an ad that works with your web banner's specifications (i.e. format, file size, etc.). Here are some things to consider when making your web banner:

  • Strong headline that catches your customer's attention
  • Say something interesting and keep it short
  • Show something interesting, like relevant products
  • Clear call to action text so your customer knows what to do next
