Your guide to buying new kitchen appliances

February 20, 2016

Before you spend even a single penny, here’s what you should know to help you save money on the new appliances you need with the features you want.

Your guide to buying new kitchen appliances

Time to repair or better to replace?

First thing’s first: do you need to replace your appliances?

  • If there is a strange smell or sound coming from one of your appliances, if it’s over 10 years old, or if you’re concerned  about it’s energy efficiency, then you already know that it’s likely time for a replacement.
  • Before you run out to the store, keep in mind that repairing your appliance could be an option , but involves you having to know the appliance model number, find the part at the best price, and have the piece shipped to you. The upside? It can save you a bundle, but you’ll still need to know how to fix it.
  • If all else fails and you’d still like to salvage your appliance, but can’t do the work yourself, consider shopping around for a reputable appliance repair service. Start by asking for referrals from friends and family, and remember to never to go by price alone.

Buying the essentials

The variety of appliances available for your kitchen can seem nearly limitless. But when it comes down to it, there are some appliances that you and your kitchen simply can’t do without.

Refrigerator

Except when you’re away, this is something you’ll use every single day, so make sure it works for you.

  • You should first figure out what your needs are to determine which type of refrigerator you’d like, as fridge types are divided by size, function and layout.
  • There are a few choices to consider for a freezer,  such as a traditional top freezer, a bottom freezer, or a side-by-side fridge.
  • Next, you’ll want to consider if you want any special features, like water and ice dispensers, temperature zones, or a stainless steel finish.
  • Don’t forget to measure the space where you intend to put the fridge. If the space is too tight your fridge may not cool properly.
  • Also important for the choice of fridge size is the door direction on the fridge; you don’t want to get home with a fridge that doesn’t fit or open!

Microwave

If well maintained, a microwave can actually last you quite a long time.

  • If you are looking for a new one, the main thing is to how much microwave power you need.
  • The higher the wattage, the faster and more efficient the microwave will be, so consider if you just want to warm drinks and make popcorn, or cook full meals.
  • Size also matters where microwaves are concerned: from small (14-23 litres) to full-size (51-57 litres) microwaves, consider how many people you might use it to cook for: just you? Or the whole family?

Dishwasher

After making a mess in the kitchen, a dishwasher can be your saving grace.

  • First, consider the size you have for installation, measuring all halls and doorways to ensure you can get the dishwasher into the house.
  • Next, you’ll want to remove the old unit and get working on installing the new one.
  • Of course, budget probably plays a role, but luckily there are conventional dishwashers, premium dishwashers or a dishdrawer that will fit your needs.
  • Consider energy efficiency, sound number of racks and load size. There are plenty of extras, like heated dry or additional wash cycles, to suit your needs.

Coffee maker

Let’s be honest, the coffee maker is probably the most important small appliance in your home.

Kettle

A kettle is useful for more than just a cup of tea .

  • Before you buy a kettle, consider if you prefer a stovetop or electric style.
  • Once you’ve decided on that, consider other features such as the body, whistle, and temperature control.

Slow cooker

What could be better than throwing all your ingredients in the slow cooker in the morning and having a delicious meal waiting for you when you get home?

  • Before you buy, consider the slow cooker features such as heating elements and settings, as well as factors such as capacity and shape.

Other appliances

Of course, there are many, many more appliances you could include in your kitchen.

  • If your family loves sandwiches, consider a panini press for delicious, melted sandwiches.
  • If breakfast is king, a waffle maker will rival any diner breakfast.
  • A pressure cooker is perfect for cooking an entire meal in one pot.
  • If your family loves to barbecue (and who doesn’t?) consider getting an indoor grill to get the delicious steak you crave, even if it’s 20 below.
  • A food processor can transform the way you cook, taking a lot of the heavy work out of preparing food.
  • If you have a keen eye for vintage appliances, do your research ahead of buying (if you intend to use it) and make sure the appliance is compatible with new technology.

Deciding to renovate or update the appliances your kitchen is very exciting, even if it is a bit overwhelming. Luckily, this list of tips to consider should help make buying a breeze.
