The only rib joints worth knowing in Edmonton

Everyone has their personal preference for which types of BBQ ribs are tops - beef or pork. But it’s really based on the restaurant, how long they’ve roasted or marinated the meat and, of course, the amazing sauces and sides that make this a complete meal. Don’t forget your bib and hand wipes when you check out these Edmonton spots.

Sloppy Hoggs

1
9563 118 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T5G 0N9

They use St. Louis side ribs for their higher fat content, which helps keep them moist and makes them melt in your mouth. Their barbecue sauces are all made from scratch and ribs come in half or full slab. For a good variety, try the half smoked BBQ chicken and half slab Sloppy Hogg ribs.

Grillbillys Smokehouse BBQ Inc

2
8310 Roper Rd Nw, Edmonton, AB T6E 6E3

This restaurant dubs itself “Real Southern-Style BBQ” quite accurately. You can’t have proper southern-style BBQ without corn bread. Their fresh-baked breads are loaded with bacon and cheddar cheese and are killer. Lest we forget the ribs - Smokehouse St. Louis ribs. There are no words.

Meat Barbecue Ltd

3
8216 104 St Nw, Edmonton, AB T6E 4E6

Located in the heart of old Strathcona, MEAT serves up homemade sauces for an authentic BBQ meal. It’s no surprise their ribs are stupendous. Try the rosemary yam mash and Brussel sprouts for sides. And, don’t forget the bourbon, with a slew of varieties to choose from for the real connoisseurs.

Dadeo

4
10548A 82 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T6E 2A4

They baste their St. Louis ribs in their homemade BBQ sauce and served with the most amazing side of jambalaya rice and potato hash. To really have a southern-style experience, try their signature biscuits with jalapeño jelly. We promise you’ve never had anything like this before.

New Indian Sweets & Restaurant

5
6224 99 St Nw, Edmonton, AB T6E 6C7

Served with rice, bean medley and grilled corn, the BBQ ribs are amazing. Their ribs are tender, fall-off-the-bone and have a great smoky flavour. Try the gingerbread cake with toffee sauce for dessert.

Memphis Blues Barbeque House

6
5317 23 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T6L 7G4

Slabs o’ribs are great, but go for the rib ends meal served with homestyle corn bread, BBQ pit beans, slaw and tater salad. Or, for those on-the-go, try the rib ends sandwich. Three words: nom nom nom.

Corso Thirty Two

7
10345 Jasper Ave Nw, Edmonton, AB T5J 1Y5

Though they don’t offer a lot of rib varieties, their fried short rib antipasti is quite phenomenal. Served with shaved pear and arugula salad and crostini, you might want to order a few of these to make a meal out of it. But since you’re here, why not order the braised beef cheek with polenta and chocolate torta for dessert?

On a cold, snowy Edmonton night, nothing says lovin’ like a cup of hot chocolate. It’s no surprise this drink was originally dubbed the “elixir of the gods.” Regardless of the variety you select, or whether you opt for the simplest hot chocolate on the menu, all I can say is ... don’t forget the marshmallows.
