My friends and I decided to visit Cambridge for an out-of-town getaway. We are all admitted food snobs (one is a chef), so we perused menus and reviews online before heading out (we're from the GTA). It was pretty busy on Friday night so I am glad we made reservations. We arrived and were seated by a very accommodating host (who we found out later was an owner), and served by one of the most pleasant servers I've ever encountered (perhaps his name was Josh?). Every single employee at that restaurant was happy to be at work, which may not sound important, but it is and is one of the gages I use when I'm dining out. My husband and I both worked in restaurants for years, and happy staff says a lot about the owners, chef and overall customer experience that the server is trying to sell. Josh spoke highly of the owner as well as proudly explained the food and the creativeness of the chef and his menu. The food was fresh, creative and delicious. We were really delighted. It wasn't a five-star dining experience (but you are not going in expecting that), rather, it is a twist on pub fare that will leave you pleasantly surprised. We also enjoyed that the restaurant was not 'full of itself', the staff, chef and owners were humble and grateful for any compliments and made us feel welcome and appreciated as diners at their restaurant. My friends and I were sold from the moment we walked in. So much so, that we went back for lunch the next day (it was a no-brainer) and the chef came out to say hi to us and thank us for coming back! We cannot say enough great things about our experience there. I strongly encourage anyone reading this to visit Cafe 13 and enjoy their great food and hospitality. Read more

We have come every year in December from Hamilton to Simcoe to see the Christmas lights. We stop at the Barrel Restaurant first, and it is a highlight of our trip: excellent food, excellent atmosphere. There is a very large menu, so I know people can order what they want and sometimes get something different from what they want. Suffice to say that I find the Penne Capri on par with meals served in Italy, and my husband and in-laws refuse to order anything other than the lasagna because they enjoy it so much every time. A couple of weeks ago, my boyfriend, sister and her fiance decided to go out for dinner. We decided to try something new rather than go to the typical restaurants such as Jack Astors or Montanas. My sister's fiance, recommended we go to Beaver and Bulldog. He said he's gone there before and really enjoyed the food. When we got there, we were immediately seated in a very nice, comfortable and private booth. Our server came immediately, introducing herself and taking our drink orders. Once we had some time to think over what we wanted, we placed our orders. My sister's fiance ordered the Pan Roasted Chicken Supreme that consisted of stuffed chicken, potatoes and vegetables. The rest of us got typical pub food. We waited a while for our food, but the company was great so the wait wasn't horrible. When the food came, I recieved the Canadian Burger and fries which looked and tasted delicious. My boyfriend got a plate full of wings and very much enjoyed them. My sister got a ceasar salad and a side of sweet potatoe fries. Us three were satisfied with our meals. But my sister's fiance (the most excited to get his meal) was rather disapointed when we recieved his plate. The portion was very small. Definately not enough food to feed a 22 year-old man. We were disapointed with this especially for the price that he had paid for his meal. All in all the food ended up to be quite delicious but the meal portions could have been much larger for the price we ended up paying for them. I enjoyed the pub atmosphere. It was clean and classy and gave all the customers the privacy they would like at their tables. I would go again to this restaurant/pub but would not recommend the pan roasted chicken supreme to a man. Even if the menu does make it sound delicious. Read more

I am a semi-regular at this location, and also go to the other locations in Waterloo and Cambridge now and then. The service is pretty snarly, but a bit more attentive than at the other locations. The Brassie is a great place to go with a group of friends. Personally, I go on Tuesdays for the Trivia Night and have a great time, even though the competition is pretty stiff. Often times there are 10 or more teams and the place is full, so the service leaves something to be desired, and even when its not busy there are often mix-ups with orders (usually minor). The quality of the food has really improved over the last year or so and the price is comparable to other pubs in the area. As long as you don't come on Tuesday, you can usually count on a table for a larger group (6 or more). Read more

It was my choice. Anywhere I wanted to go for my birthday dinner was the plan. It had been over 10 years since I last ate at the Charcoal Steak House, so that was it. We made reservations early and were seated at a booth. The restaurant was very dark, which bothered one of my guests, but I loved it. A very warm atmosphere. Private while sitting in a room full of other diners. We chose the Crab Cakes for our appetizer. They were delicious. Perfectly crusted with panko, soft and tender on the inside. A nice tartar sauce served on the side. The dish also came with a side of pickled cucumber, which I was not a fan of, but my guests loved. Looking over the menu, we made the obvious choices being in a steak house. The prime rib special, the Nebraska Rib-Eye and the King City Rib-Eye. The Prime Rib was great. Soft and juicy, but my guest had an issue. She ordered well done, but it was served medium. She still ate it, and loved it, but was not given what she ordered. My other guest loved the King-City Steak. Served with Sweet Potato Fries. I sampled a bite or two of her steak, and it tasted better than my Nebraska cut. The steak I chose, the Nebraska Rib, was wonderful. But again, the kitchen was a little off with the cooking. I ordered medium, and was served well done. Regardless, it still was one of the best steaks I've ever had. The ends of the steak had that perfect crunchy crust that everyone loves on a Rib Steak. We passed on dessert, seeing I had a cake at home waiting. After chatting to our waitress, my guest let it slip that it was my birthday, before the bill came she brought out a peice of Mint Ice Cream Cake free of charge. I appreciated that. Read more

My favorites is the seaweed salad and the mango rolls although there are many dishes I like. The prices are very good for all you can eat or order meals off the menu. It is not a buffet but you order dishes until you are full. But remember that if you can't eat it you can take it home for the price of the dish. Which is fair. There are a large variety of dishes and all of the items arrived to our table piping hot. The service was quite fast and friendly. I wouldn’t describe the food as outstanding, just good. I was hoping that the dishes would have been more authentic Chinese. The Sichuan chicken with mixed vegetables was not spicy at all, a total disappointment. Being Sichuan, I was hoping for a spicy, hot dish. It was pretty bland. When I mentioned this to the hostess, she said that we could have ordered it spicy.
