5 ways to get rid of the cellulite on your legs: what works and what doesn't

What is cellulite?

When fat cells underneath the skin grow larger than the space allotted to them, they push against connective tissue bands that hold the muscle to the skin.

As fat cells push up and collagen bands pull down, your skin begins to have an uneven appearance and lose elasticity.

What causes cellulite?

There isn't one specific cause of cellulite, but there are a few theories as to why it may occur.

  • A person's genetic makeup can predispose them to developing cellulite, and hormones, such as estrogen, insulin, noradrenaline, thyroid hormones and prolactin, may also play a part.
  • People who eat a high fat, high carbohydrate diet with too little fibre and too much salt have more cellulite, as do smokers and those who don't exercise.
  • Sitting or standing in one position for extensive lengths of time or wearing tight clothing or underwear that restricts blood flow can also cause cellulite to form.

How can I get rid of cellulite on legs?

According to the Mayo Clinic, many of the therapies and cures that are advertised to get rid of cellulite are not scientifically proven to be effective; however, some may temporarily improve the appearance of your legs. Here are five options.

1. Liposuction

Liposuction temporarily changes the shape of your legs, but in some instances, it can make the cellulite look worse.

  • A better option is a laser-assisted liposuction treatment that destroys fat cells and tightens the skin. However, it is expensive and the fat cells grow back quickly.

2. Laser and radio-frequency systems

There are combinations of laser and radio-frequency systems that use tissue massage, radio-frequency technology and infrared light to treat cellulite.

  • After a series of treatments, there are improvements, but results may only last six months.

3. Massage

Vigorous massage is an option with short-term results.

  • After fat cells are manipulated and traumatized by massage, swelling gives the appearance of smoother skin. When the swelling goes down, though, your cellulite comes back.

4. Creams

Topical creams are not effective and can trigger rashes and allergic reactions.

  • Mesotherapy, a procedure that involves injecting a solution under the skin, can also cause rashes, uneven bumps and infections.

5. Lifestyle

The best way to attack cellulite is by losing weight through healthy eating and regular exercise.

  • Reducing fat content in cells and toning and strengthening muscles in your legs will improve their appearance.
  • Maintain a healthy weight, eat a diet of fruits, vegetables and other high-fibre foods, reduce your stress level and put aerobic and toning exercises into your daily routine.
