How to care for any skin type

February 25, 2016

No matter what your age, facial care is important. To get your started, it’s good to know what type of skin you have and how to best take care of it. Here are some ways to help you determine your skin type, and what to do to keep your skin looking its best.

How to care for any skin type

What’s your skin type?

Do you have dry, oily, combination or acne-prone skin? Here’s how to figure it out:

Dry skin

  • Dry skin is generally sensitive with dry patches. It sometimes has a dull complexion or redness.
  • Generally, the dryness is caused by a lack of natural oils in the skin.
  • Deal with it by trying a natural remedy to soothe your dry skin.
  • The main thing is to keep your skin hydrated, so create a mask with avocado and olive oil or honey.
  • If you’re looking for cleanser, find one that contains moisturizers, like milks or oils.
  • Take it easy on exfoliants, limiting use to only once per week.

Oily skin

  • Oily skin is shiny, uneven and usually has visible blackheads and pores.
  • The cause of oily skin is usually because too much sebum is being produced, causing shine.
  • Deal with it by avoiding over-cleansing or using the wrong products that can make oily skin worse.
  • You want something that will help to tighten pores, such as a clay mud mask.
  • Be sure to use oil-free makeup.

Combination skin

  • This is just as it sounds: your skin has a combination of both oily spots and dry spots.
  • Usually the T-zone, or forehead, nose and chin, are oily but the cheeks are dry.
  • Deal with it by finding a cleanser that’s really rich, or else try using two separate products that can mattify the oily parts while moisturizing the dry sections.

Acne-prone skin

  • One of the most common skin problems, acne-prone skin tends to cause a lot of pimples and spots.
  •  You can deal with it by starting to battle acne with a homemade facial mask to help clear your skin.
  • Ingredients like honey, egg whites and oatmeal can all help to heal your skin.
  •  When picking makeup for acne-prone skin, be sure that you find a type that’s oil-free and non-comedogenic.
  • Be sure to clean your makeup brushes regularly.

No matter what type of skin you have, you can experiment with homemade face masks, or make a gentle mask or cleanser made with baking soda before paying lots of money for a product.

Men and skincare

  • There is no reason for men to avoid caring for their skin. In recent years, the facial skincare products for men has increased massively.
  • Men can follow the same definitions to determine their skin, and cleanse and moisturize accordingly. One thing men need to consider is shaving; whether you choose an electric razor or a blade razor, be sure to take care of your skin to keep it looking its best.
