The benefits of DIY homemade skincare

These simple homemade skincare remedies can replace expensive, over-the-counter face products while keeping your skin looking and feeling great.

Start with cleansers

Dirt, bacteria, grease and makeup – a lot of ugly things build up on our skin during the day. Cleansing your skin regularly removes impurities. And mild exfoliation helps prevent clogged pores that lead to breakouts. But soaps can strip away important surface oils and dry out skin, leading to more complications.

Clean your face every day with one of these homemade cleansing concoctions.

  • Milk cleanser: A milk bath for your face is an excellent cleanser for all skin types. Dip a cotton ball into a dish containing a quarter cup of milk and gently wipe over forehead, nose, cheeks and chin. Repeat until all of the milk has been used, then rinse with cool water. Skin is left baby soft.
  • Yogurt cleanser: Yogurt’s natural anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties help balance our insides, it’s no wonder this works similarly on the skin. Massage plain yogurt into skin and rinse.

Add toners to your routine

Toners should be used after cleansing to remove any leftover impurities and help balance the pH in skin. Here are different natural ingredients for various skin types.

  • All skin types: Apple cider vinegar’s health benefits are endless and don’t just stop at the skin. Taken internally it helps alleviate digestive discomfort and nurtures hair and skin. Use topically as an astringent for combination and oily skin. Apple cider vinegar has a strong scent, but a cold-water rinse should remove any lingering smell. Avoid the eye area.
  • Acne-prone skin: Battling acne or acne scars? Aloe vera’s healing properties clean and soothe damaged skin. Use a cotton ball, letting skin absorb the gel instead of rinsing.
  • Dry or sensitive skin: Witch hazel is a liquid distilled from the witch hazel plant, leaves and bark. Used as a toner it fights bacteria and tightens pores. Rose water is a by-product of rose oil, which is used in cosmetics and perfumes. It’s perfect for sensitive and combination skin as it can help balance the skin’s pH level.

Top it off with a facial mask

Masks can help tone and brighten skin, unclog pores, exfoliate and soothe damaged skin. They should be used no more than once per week. Here are some natural ingredients you should consider for your homemade skincare mask.

  • Honey is a natural anti-oxidant with many healing properties. Use raw, unpasteurized honey as a homemade skincare mask to ensure its healing nutrients are at their strongest. It’s as simple as smearing a thin layer of honey on your face, avoiding eye area. Leave on for 10 – 30 minutes and rinse off with lukewarm or cool water.
  • Oatmeal is highly beneficial for itchy or irritated skin and works as a base ingredient for masks. Customize to your skin type by mixing with lemon (oily skin), yogurt or honey (combination skin) and even mashed banana or avocado (dry skin).

Try any of the above homemade skincare remedies and find your skin glowing, and your wallet fuller in no time.
