Oils and mineral salts: choosing the right products for the bath

February 25, 2016

To help the skin regain a balanced pH, improve circulation and combat all sorts of common ailments, add salts, oils and active products to your bath. Here are a few tips to guide you in your choice.

Oils and mineral salts: choosing the right products for the bath

1. Citrus bath bombs

Easy to make, these balls have an invigorating scent that brings a fresh feeling to the body and mind. Neroli and lemon create a stimulating and energizing atmosphere while the grapefruit acts as a purifier.

To stop the scent from fading too quickly, the balls must be kept in an airtight container, dry and away from light. They keep for three to six months.

  • 125 g (1 cup) baking soda
  • 60 g (½ cup) of citric acid
  • 60 g (½ cup) cornflour
  • 30 ml (2 tbsp) almond oil
  • 15 ml (1 tbsp) water
  • 10 drops of neroli essential oil
  • 10 drops of lime essential oil
  • 10 drops of grapefruit essential oil
  • 5 g (1 tsp) borax
  • 1 spray bottle of witch hazel
  1. Mix the baking soda, citric acid and cornflour. In a separate bowl, mix the almond oil, water, essential oils and borax. Sprinkle the dry mixture with the wet ingredients, pouring the liquid with one hand and mixing quickly with the other.
  2. Press firmly into soap molds or silicone ramekins and leave to dry overnight.
  3. Turn the moulds over on wax paper and tap the base to tip the bath bombs out. Spray them with witch hazel to form a crust and prevent them from cracking.
  • After a bath, the almond oil will leave a thin film that retains moisture on the skin.

2. Properties of mineral salts

  • Sulfur: Stimulates the mucous membranes and soothes the symptoms of colds and respiratory problems. It is also effective against acne and eczema.
  • Calcium and potassium: Relieve arthritis and disorders of the central nervous system.
  • Magnesium: Essential for strong bones and proper functioning of the heart, nerves and muscles.

Looking to jazz up bath time? Add these salts to your bath and your skin will reap several benefits!
