5 foods you didn't know you could grill (but definitely should)

When most people think of grilling, they go for chicken, burgers, hot dogs, steaks, baked potatoes and shish-kebabs. Although these foods certainly lend themselves to being cooked over smouldering coals or a gas-powered fire, true grilling aficionados know there are other equally delicious options. Here are five you should try.

1. Artichokes

Some folks love them, others fear them. Artichokes aren't the easiest veggies to prepare or eat, but a little effort goes a long way. Artichokes are amazing grilled. Slice them in half, brush them with olive oil and garlic salt, and grill to a light char. Peel and eat the tender leaves until you reach the most delicious part: the heart.

2. Bananas

Bananas may just be the world's most convenient healthy, sweet treat. They even come in their own easy-to-open biodegradable wrappers.

  • For an elevated take on this common fruit, peel it, brush on a butter and brown sugar glaze, and grill over low heat until the sugars caramelize.

3. Escarole

For non-foodies, escarole is an endive. In other words, a fancy lettuce. Yes, you can turn it into a salad, but think outside the box: season it with some olive oil and salt and pepper, and sear it on the grill (as a bunch) and you've instantly elevated this crunchy green.

  • Grill it a minute or two on each side, and you'll impart your greens with a smoky, charred flavour that is far more complex than salad.

4. Peaches

Making dessert on the grill may sound like a complex and labour-intensive feat, but it doesn't have to be. Peaches are among the sweetest, juiciest, commonly-available fresh fruits.

  • What could be simpler than slicing a peach in half, removing the pit, loosely wrapping the halves in foil, and throwing them on the grill? Turn often and in about 15 minutes or so enjoy a warm peach of a dessert.
  • For an added treat, top your grilled peach half with a scoop of ice cream.

5. Pizza

In this case, you'll want to create a dough then stretch it over your grill grate to create the canvas for your toppings. Grill one side, then turn it over and top it with cheese, tomato sauce (if you desire) and toppings. Next, cover the grill lid for 30 seconds to a minute to cook all the way through. Finally, enjoy the rich taste of brick-oven pizza crafted in your own grill.
